South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) debuted a new school song, or alma mater, at the college’s virtual commencement ceremony on June 20.

The music and lyrics of ‘The Waves of South Puget Sound’ were written by SPSCC music faculty member John Guarente and is performed by the SPSCC Chamber Singers. The music department also plans to create an orchestral arrangement in the near future.

The school song is a project that has been in the works since Guarente started with SPSCC in 2018, but the timing of the song’s release feels especially significant for the music department.

SPSCC’s new Associate in Music – Direct Transfer Agreement degree program was announced late this spring and is now enrolling students to begin their music studies locally before transferring to a university. Guarente believes the new program, along with the new school song, will strengthen the music studies and culture at SPSCC.

“It’s important for students to get a sense of school community and pride,” said Guarente. “An alma mater can really help our school community build on that sense of pride.”
