Tora and Nate Kirkwood, the industrious young owners of BITS Café, are still in the creating mode. Their comfy, westside neighborhood eatery continues to evolve with soul-warming culinary offerings. A month after opening a year ago in July, Tora and Nate learned their fourth child would be born the following April. The news was thrilling and wonderful, but it slowed the pace for their burgeoning business. Now the agreeable baby Fox Zelda Kirkwood has joyfully arrived and the activity at the café is picking up.Tora offers her sincere apologies for the bumps along the way and wants people who may have been dismayed to come back in again for food and friendship.

Along with being open on weekends for brunch starting at 8:00 a.m., BITS is open during the week at 7:00 a.m. You can order a fresh smoothie to-go with all sorts of fun ingredients such as peaches, kale, dates, coconut milk, acai, chia seeds, turmeric and raw honey in just about any combination you want. Daily drink specials with various fresh vegetables and fruits or a warming shot of Bailey’s with coffee are listed on a special board. There is also table service when you have more time available.

People have been clamoring for Tora’s soups since the beginning. Never limited by a recipe, she brings her creativity into play with available ingredients. She is extremely particular about the taste of everything, adding that it is her level of standards that drives the quality.“I buy the ingredients I’d buy for my family,”she says. “A lot of thought goes into ingredients.” With primarily organic products, things taste better. It is not unusual for customers to come in for a bowl and then want to take what was left in the kitchen home for the rest of their family. BITS’ soup pots are getting larger to accommodate the demand.

In addition to Tora’s soups, lunch items include fresh salads, sandwiches and charcuterie boards. These savory boards have various meats and cheeses with spreads to smear on bread plus bites like olives, pickles and nuts. Remember you can enjoy a glass of beer or cider, too. The espresso machine is turned on all day.

“We are hard workers,” said Tora who looks for balance with her young family, business and everything else. She extends that level of concern to her employees by cultivating a safe and supportive work environment. You might find Nate at the café on the weekends, but during the week he works at ZylVardos, a fantasy builder specializing in tiny homes.

“It is such a treat to be back at the café,” muses Tora who is proud of her team and the food. We are happy to have you, BITS.
