Care Connection offers an unique solution to the caregiving puzzle. They facilitate the coordination of those wanting home care with independent service providers in order to create satisfying relationships for all involved. The program is one of many services offered through Senior Services for South Sound. This not-for-profit organization has created Care Connection, a registry of screened providers, all owning their own businesses, who are ready to address the needs of people wanting in-home care.

The demand for home care expands every day. The types of care wanted vary as greatly as the numbers who want it. Family support may be far away or already helping as much as possible. More hands are needed. Requirements may be for personal hygiene when help is needed to take a shower or get dressed. Assistance might be wanted for grocery shopping or meal preparation as well as for transportation. Often the health issues become more complicated as we age. Your mother needs daily medication management or help with her physical therapy. She doesn’t drive and her short-term memory is limited. At times care is required around the clock. The beauty of Care Connection is that their skilled and attentive contractors can address such matters.

Joining the Care Connection Team

“What makes Care Connection special and different from other agencies is that there is a direct relationship between the caregiver and the client.  They agree on schedule, type of care and salary.  We’re interested in improving both the lives of clients and caregivers.  Higher pay, greater flexibility and less limitations of caregiver services, makes everyone much happier!” explains April Slee, Care Connection Director.

Care receivers can schedule simple or complex tasks all with the same person. As needs shift, the two parties can agree to move forward, adding or subtracting assistance along the way. Receivers pay their providers directly on a weekly basis, which puts more money in the hands of the actual provider because there is less agency overhead. Care Connection does receive a small hourly fee over and above the payment to the provider which is paid directly from the care receiver. “Any profits realized goes directly to Senior Services, which provides an impressive array of services and activities for seniors in our area,” says April.  What would be profit in a typical business model instead goes back into more services for the growing senior community.

The Care Connection registry is made up of independent business owners who go through a process to be accepted onto the registry. To get on the registry, a number of steps must be taken. Providers must obtain a business license including a Unified Business Identifier (UBI). This process offers a great opportunity for those who want to run their own affairs.

The Care Connection provides guidelines for getting your own business license. Also needed is a Washington State driver’s license and current CPR card. Prospective registrants must pass the state background check along with the National Sex Offenders Sweep. Professional references will be checked. An application, resume and experience are also required.  Once accepted, you need to carry malpractice insurance. Care Connection can refer you to an agency for affordable coverage.

Finding Care

Once prospective clients have talked with the team at Care Connection, a visit will be scheduled to evaluate the specific care requirements. This will allow the Care Connection Referral Specialists to connect you with the most appropriate independent care provider. They will select from their pool of talented and skilled providers who will work directly for you. Care Connection tracks weekly billing and trouble shoots as needed, but the care provider and client develop a relationship for the benefit of both parties. Clients work out their desired schedule with their care provider. Clients direct their own care with their provider.  There is greater flexibility and less limitations on the types of services caregivers can provide.

In addition to personal care, you can set up house keeping services and even basic maintenance work. Another benefit is accompanying clients to activities such as exercise or other classes. Many clients enjoy spending time at the Senior Centers. The value to remain connected with others has been shown to be critical for the longevity and well-being of all people.
