The Oly Town Artesians swept the Evergreen Premier League weekly awards when Daniel Gonzalez was named Offensive Player of the Week for his two goal, one assist performance, and Crisantos Chavez grabbed the Defensive Player of the Week for his play on the backline in Oly’s 4-1 victory over the Spokane Shadow on Saturday night.
Gonzalez, a Yelm High School and Peninsula College product who spent the last three seasons playing professionally with the OKC Energy of the USL, started the scoring off with a clinical, textbook header off a corner kick from Kahlil Bredeson. Moments later, he returned the favor and fed Bredeson for a goal, and then put the Artesians up 3-0 with a goal in the 45th minute. Gonzalez has been a difference maker in midfield during the two games he has been available for the Artesians. The team is 2-0-0 with him in the lineup and he has already tied the team record for career goals with three.
The Artesians have allowed just four goals through four games and only one of those has come in the run of play, and one of the biggest reasons is the play of defender Crisantos Chavez. The Mabton native and Evergreen State alum is part of a backline that has locked things down in front of goalkeeper JJ Olson. Chavez has also been crucial in setting up the Artesians offense, pushing forward very effectively over his 310 minutes of play through four games.
Gonzalez, Chavez and the unbeaten Artesians will face a tough test on the road this Sunday when they face division rival Seattle Stars at Starfire Stadium. First kick in Tukwila is set for 6:00 PM. The two teams have already met once this season with Oly taking a 2-1 win at Black Hills High School on May 13th. The Stars are 3-1-0 with nine points and lead the Coastal Division, just one point ahead of the Artesians. Seattle’s Cody Buchanan leads the EPLWA with four goals.
The Artesians return home on Saturday, June 16 to take on the Tri-Cities Alliance. The first 50 fans through the gates will receive an Oly Town crest magnet. First kick is set for 6:00 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at www.olytownfc.com/tickets.
