The Big Dance

What is the inspiration for Kahulanui? The band homepage states, “Kahulanui (The Big Dance) is an inspiration passed down three generations from grandfather Robert Kahulanui Naipo, to dad Rodgers L.L. Naipo Sr., to grandson and Kahulanui band leader, Lolena Naipo, Jr.” To hear their sounds and preview the band in action take a look at this YouTube video.
Who is Kahulanui you ask? According to their “Meet the Band” page at kahulanui.com, “Kahulanui has a core group of four members. The ‘core four’ of the band are Patrick Eskildsen on electric bass, lead guitar and vocals; Duke Tatom on ‘ukulele and vocals; Tim Taylor on drums/percussion and, of course, Lena Naipo on lead vocals and guitar. Kahulanui’s exciting horn section is comprised of Jesse Snyder on tenor sax, Bill Noble on baritone and alto saxophones, Joshua Timmons on trumpet, and Vincent D’Angelo on trombone. On steel guitar is Dwight Tokumoto.”
Local Island Favorites

Olympia’s newest Hawaiian restaurant, The Lanai Cafe, opened in September 2015 and seeks to bring “local island favorites” from Hawaii to Olympia. They are already making great contributions to the community and are a finalist for the Thurston Economic Development Council’s 2015 “New Business of the Year” award. And, in addition to community accolades, the restaurant is getting rave reviews from diners who are thrilled to have a taste of the islands in downtown Olympia. Visit The Lanai’s Facebook page and read some of the 68 reviews with an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars. Or, simply stop by and taste for yourself.
With live music on Friday nights and the popular “Ultimate Sampler Platter for Two”, The Lanai is quickly becoming an Olympia hotspot. You can find their menu online and visit the restaurant at 514 Capitol Way S just around the block from The Washington Center. Call (360) 584-9885 or go online to make a reservation.
