Olympia Area Weekend Events Update: August 12th – August 14th

Friday August 12th:   The South Sound Story guild will be presenting their annual Stories in the Dark summer event this Friday night (Priest Point Park East Bay Drive NE
Olympia, WA 98506). There will be storytelling for families from 7PM-8PM. After that, there will be an intermission and the storytelling will recommence with more sinister tales in the dark beginning about 8:20PM. Admission is free. Friday August 12th:   Catch a classic at the State Capitol Museum (211 21st Ave. SW Olympia, WA 98501). Key Largo, starring Humphrey Bogart, Edward G. Robertson and Lauren Bacall, tells the story of Frank McCloud (Bogart) who travels to an island in the Florida Keys to visit the widow of an old war buddy. While staying at his hotel, a hurricane traps everyone indoors and crass gangster Johnny Rocco (Robinson) takes over the building……

The movie starts at 9PM. Suggested donations for admission is $2.

 

Saturday August 13th:   Enjoy an enlightening cultural experience at the Bon Odori Festival at the Olympia Port Plaza (Market and Columbia St.
Olympia, WA 98501) at 3PM. This event is a Japanese dance festival with ancient origins; it began as a Buddhist religious rite, honoring the souls of ancestors, and has evolved into a secular folk festival. If you would like to volunteer, there are opportunities to help with publicity, setting up, food prep, and staffing during the event. Saturday August 13th:   Get classy this Saturday night (4PM-8PM) at the Capitol Land Trust’s 11th Summer Gala. The Helsing Junction Farm (12231 Independence Rd.
Rochester, WA 98579) will be hosting this upscale outdoor event featuring fantastic local food, drinks, live music by Ocho Pies, a silent auction and very special guest, author and chef Becky Selengut. There will be appetizers that highlight locally made cheeses, breads, dips and organic vegetables fresh from Helsing Junction. Dinner will be the courtesy of Xinh Dwelley of Xinh’s Clam & Oyster House and Taylor Shellfish. For vegetarian patrons there will be vegetarian and non-shellfish items available. For adult beverages, you will be treated to Fish Brewing’s famous organic beers and locally produced wines. Closing out the culinary experience will be Olympia’s own Wagner’s European Bakery with their famous desserts.

All proceeds from the Summer Gala will benefit Capitol Land Trust’s work conserving southwest Washington’s essential natural areas and working lands.
