The cities of Tumwater and Olympia share a JBLM Community Connector, the 17th Field Artillery (17 FA) Brigade. This race is a shared fundraiser between the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Olympia/Tumwater Chapter and the United States Army Field Artillery Association. The run benefits soldiers and families of the 17th Field Artillery. Both runners and spectators are welcome at the event.
Some unique features include:
- A cannon will start the race. And at least one battalion (300) soldiers will be running the 5K in Tumwater as part of their regular physical training (PT). It’s a moving experience to hear them sing cadences as they run along our streets.
- Three of the 17 FA battalions are deployed overseas, including their headquarters. Colonel Timothy Kehoe will address the crowd from Kuwait. One unit will run the 5K overseas, shown on a big screen video feed at the event.
- Red, white & blue everywhere! American flags mark the beginning of the route, courtesy of the American Legion and a bunch of other folks.
