Poetry and Music: Free Jazz and the Spoken Word
The Olympia Free Jazz Festival is offering poets a chance to present their pieces in a musical context on Sunday, July 9th at New Traditions, 300 5th Ave SW. In the afternoon there will be a workshop from 1 to 3 PM featuring Bay Area Poet/Saxophonist Lewis Jordan and Olympia Guitarist/Composer Joe Mailhot discussing their processes. This will also be a chance for poets to present their poetry in collaboration with musicians.
In the evening, successful collaborations will be a part of the concert featuring the works of Lewis Jordan, Lynn Villella and Joe Mailhot from 7 to 9 PM.
For best results, poets may want to send their poems to this email address, tohliam.eoj@hotmail.com, as it will give the composer a chance to work with the poet and poem. Preference will be given to poets who send their poetry, but those choosing to show up with their poems in hand are also welcome! Poets should be sure to bring at least 4 copies of their poems with them.
Suggested donation for the afternoon workshop is $5-$10. Tickets for the evening performance $20.
Call (360) 705-2819 for tickets or purchase at the door.
