“I’m a perfectionist. I’m pretty much insatiable. I feel there’s so many things I can improve on.” Serena Williams

Does your child hesitate or maybe even refuse to start something if they can’t see the perfect outcome? Does your child reach the next-to-last step in a project or writing assignment and make a perceived/real error, throw it all away and begin again? Does your child exceed the teacher’s expectations and rubric yet seems driven to keep going because it could be better, prettier, neater, more complex?

If these scenarios sound familiar, join the parent discussion group at NOVA at 7:00 p.m. on November 17. We’ll explore the ways in which perfectionist tendencies can manifest themselves, range from a wonderful and necessary characteristic or cause complete paralysis, and impact families and friendships. We’ll discover ways in which to support the perfectionist in your life.

Barbara Mitchell Hutton, NOVA Head of School, facilitates this monthly discussion group open to all parents who are interested in learning more about parenting highly capable/gifted adolescents. If interested, please send Barbara an email at bhutton@novaschool.org. NOVA School, 2020 22nd Ave. SE, Olympia, WA 98501
