Morocco’s Triple Role in the Global Border and Migration System presented by
Dr. Steve Niva, professor of international politics at the Evergreen State College.
Morocco is a country with a rich cultural heritage and complex history that attracts many Western visitors who enjoy its undeniable attractions. But in the past two decades Morocco has also become a major frontline state in the global migration crisis that attracts other visitors: refugees and migrants are crossing Morocco to reach Europe in ever increasing numbers while European states are pressing Morocco to bottle them up. The result is that Morocco now plays a triple role in this crisis: it is shifting from being an origin country for migration to becoming a migration transit country, while European border policies are trying to make Morocco into a final destination country to keep migrants from its borders.
Dr. Steve Niva has recently led a study abroad program of Evergreen students to study this development, meeting with government officials, academics and many local Moroccan and African NGOs that work with migrants and refugees. He will offer a framework for understanding the global migration crisis and then explain how Morocco now plays this triple role in the global border and migration system. He will share what he and his students learned in their recent study abroad program and will be joined by some of his students.
