Ethiopia:
How Ethnicity, Electricity, and COVID19 Threaten its Narrow Path to Peace
Jeffrey Ried, PhD and Sephanie Garlichs
Ethiopia plays a central role in the stability of East Africa, but stands at a critical crossroads today. Ethnic and religious-based violence, rapidly growing income inequality, and a nearly-completed dam that promises electricity to its 110 million people and much needed foreign exchange has caused Egypt to threaten war. Questions of national identity and the ties that bind the people of Ethiopia are being debated. Stephanie Garlichs and Jeffrey Ried, who have lived and worked over several years in Ethiopia, will share their perspectives on the questions that will determine Ethiopia’s future and its role in the region.
