Please join the Olympia Symphony for the second concert of our 64th season, a special MATINEE (3:00 pm) performance, where we will be joined by mezzo-soprano, Cheryse McLeod Lewis. Although this concert is called “Autumnal Reflections” it could have easily been titled “Those whom the gods love die young,” as practially all the composers featured died at an early age: Shubert at 31, Purcell at 36, Mozart at 36, Gershwin at 38, and Butterworth at 31; the only exception is Richard Strauss (lived to be 85) but his tone poem Death and Transfiguration imagines dying at the age of 26. Spend your Sunday afternoon reflecting with us – with arias, songs, and symphonic treasures.
Program:
SHUBERT: Symphony No. 8 in B minor, D. 759 (“Unfinished”)
PURCELL: “When I am laid in earth” from Dido and Aeneas
MOZART: “Laudamus te” from Mass in C minor, K.427
GERSHWIN, arr. Holcombe: “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess
HOGAN, arr. Dean: “Give Me Jesus”
BUTTERWORTH: A Shropshire Lad, Rhapsody for Orchestra
R. STRAUSS: Symphonic Poem, Death and Transfiguration, Op. 24
