This week the Olympia Speculative Fiction Group will have a workshop focused solely on career planning and development.

We’ve already done the hardest part by deciding on a genre that we plan on working in. Now, let’s dig deeper and discover the types of writers we want to be. This topic has been briefly mentioned here and there, but is a healthy exercise to go through in order to get an idea on if we are doing the things now that will help us get to where we want to go in the future.

This workshop will be slightly different from the previous ones as we won’t be sharing or writing stories but instead working on thinking about ourselves, our craft, and the career we want to make out of writing. We will do a little writing but it will be a short response.

For the sake of the group and keeping things on topic, we’ll only be getting into our speculative fiction writing careers and not focusing on careers outside of that, though all careers and vocations are valid.

What authors or writers do we admire for their careers? Where do we envision ourselves in the future as writers? What things are important to us as writers? What are our dreams and goals as writers? What publishers, markets, or mags do we hope to see ourselves in someday? Let’s answer these questions and more to help us gain focus and point each other in the right direction of how to achieve our goals.
