The award-winning movie “The Throwaways” tells a story through the eyes of community activist, homeless filmmaker and ex-felon, Ira McKinley about the struggle for economic and social justice for people of color in America. Director Bhawin Suchak will screen the film and take audience questions on Saturday, January 24 at the Olympia Timberland Library from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The movie follows McKinley’s movements through the broken-down streets of inner-city Albany, NY as he speaks out loudly and publically about inequity, police brutality and the mass incarceration of black men throughout America. For the people living in these streets, life is an on-going struggle for survival. Many of them pass, repeatedly, in and out of the legal system. As one young man reflects “… friends and family getting shot and killed … everybody in prison – half the people I grew up with, they in prison now.”
