The Lacey – Mińsk Mazowiecki Sister City Association is partnering with South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) for the South Sound’s first Chopin Piano Competition for youth ages 12 to 23.  Two competition winners will take home prize money and perform on stage at the SPSCC Artist & Lecture series show with Polish pianist Jacek Nazarczuk in the Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts.

From March 20 to 23, 2017, participants in two age categories will compete by playing four pieces by Frédéric Chopin, whose birthplace was Mińsk Mazowiecki, Lacey’s sister city.  One winner from each age group will be selected to play live on stage with Nazarczuk on March 25.  Applications are due by Jan. 31 and are open to all counties in Southwest Washington (Thurston, Pierce, Mason, Grays Harbor, Pacific, Lewis, Wahkiakum, Cowlitz, Clark, and Skamania).

In addition the piano competition and performance, The Gallery at SPSCC will be showing a selection of drawings by Polish artist Marek Chabrowski, who specialized in documenting sacred wooden structures from the Republic of Poland from 1918 to 1945.  There will be an opening reception with a Polish curator before the Nazarczuk performance on March 25 beginning at 6 p.m.

Since 2003, the Lacey Sister City Program has provided social, cultural, humanitarian, trade, tourism, and educational enrichment in the Lacey community.  Through student exchanges and support of local events like Lacey Days and the Ethnic Celebration, the Lacey Sister City Program is proud to bring the first ever Chopin Piano Competition to the youth of the South Sound.

Tickets for the performance with the winners and Jacek Nazarczuk can be purchased online for $10 (general admission) or $8 (students and seniors) or by calling The Washington Center for the Performing Arts box office at 360-753-8586.
