Join us for a reading and conversation with two memoirists writing about contemporary cultural and medical issues. Jennifer Berney’s book The Other Mothers offers an intimate look at what many queer couples go through when they decide to conceive a child. Berney uses her own experience as a launching point to explore the patriarchal history of the fertility industry, the value of community, and the meaning of family. Kate Washington’s Already Toast: Caregiving and Burnout In America is both a memoir of the author’s struggle to care for her spouse through a devastating illness and a sharp feminist critique of America’s lack of support for caregivers—a systemic failure the pandemic has exposed all the more brutally.
