Yuichi Kimura is a professional taiko drummer from Kobe, Japan. He’s crossing the Pacific this July to speak and perform at St. Martin’s University! He’ll be giving a brief talk on his craft, taiko drumming, and then playing music with anyone from the audience who’d like to join him. He will provide a taiko drumming lesson for those who would like to take part. We ask that you be at least (but not necessarily anywhere near!) ten years old to participate. Beginners are very welcome! Kimura and audience members will be playing alongside the stellar pianist Naoko Sokolik. Kimura will also present a collaboration piece with the highly talented live calligrapher Chiyo Sanada, building a rich performance of combined sound and sight. Come revel in traditional Japanese art forms and feel first-hand the energy brought to the stage by this award-winning musician!

Special thanks to Associate Professor Darrell Born for the use of his space at St. Martin’s, and to the Okinawa Kenjin Club of Washington State, who will be generously providing drums for this event!
