The Estuarium’s Meet the Beach is a hands on opportunity to work with beachgoers who visit our local beaches. Volunteers in this program work to create a greater understanding of the Puget Sound. Meet the Beach is offered to the general public at local beaches, such as Burfoot Park, Tolmie State Park, Priest Point, Frye Cove, and Woodard Bay during summer low tides.

Volunteer Beach Naturalists learn about the amazing diversity of creatures who live there and talk with people about how everyday choices can have a positive impact on our water quality. They answer people’s “what is that?” questions, get kids engaged looking for the creatures that live in the intertidal zone, increase awareness about what it takes to survive here and beach behavior (creatures home and leave living things at the beach, be gentle, and share ideas about what we can do to protect our waters and the creatures that depend upon its health.

We realize that our state’s policy on COVID-19 is ever evolving. In order to keep this program running and safe for participants, all training session will be held on local beaches where we can follow social distancing guidelines. We are hoping that the end of April brings us good news in regards to this pandemic, and that new and returning Beach Naturalists may have the opportunity to shake off the cabin fever and engage with our unique estuarine ecosystem while still practicing precautions to keep our community safe and healthy.
