Orca is excited to present two talented first time novelists from the Northwest, Tim Hicks and Carol DeMent.
Tim Hicks will be reading from his book Last Stop Before Tomorrow. Last Stop Before Tomorrow shares the compelling tale of three people as they wrestle with the riddles, paradoxes, and dilemmas of climate change and technology, and search for answers to the human predicament and their own lives. Tim has published one book of nonfiction. A short story of his was awarded honorable mention as one of the top 99 stories in a Writer’s Digest context that drew 16,000 entries. He lives in Eugene, Oregon where he facilitates dialogues and mediates disputes that often have an environmental aspect.
Carol DeMent will be reading from her new novel Saving Nary. From the Killing Fields of the Cambodia to a small town in the Pacific Northwest, refugee Khath Sophal treads a narrow path between the horrors of his past and the uncertainties of the future.Haunted by memories of his missing daughters, Khath befriends Nary, a troubled young Cambodian girl but then suspects that Nary’s mother is Khmer Rouge.His struggle to find the truth ultimately forces him to face his own past and unravel the mystery of his missing daughters. Carol worked in the field of SE Asian refugee resettlement for over seven years and completed master’s level research into international refugee resettlement policy. She lived for two years in Thailand as a Peace Corps volunteer and has traveled extensively in SE Asia.
