Browsers is pleased to host Olympia artist Brett Rude for the month of August. We will host an opening on Saturday, August 4 from 5:00-7:00 PM.

Brett Rude is a self-taught artist. He finds his greatest inspiration in the Color Field movement of the 1940s and 1950s in New York. As the subject of his art, Brett explores the expressive power of color. Like music and literature, color can dramatically affect one’s moods, feelings and emotions. Color can awaken joy and fear; it can create a place of peace or stimulate high anxiety.

“This mystic quality of color should likewise find expression in a work of art.” Hans Hofmann

As a process painter, Brett is more interested in the process of applying the paint: the drying time, the tools used, how the successive layers combine to interact on the canvas, etc. Rarely
does he begin with a predetermined outcome or image in mind.

He calls these paintings “flourishings” and encourages you to feel them – to experience them – rather than struggling to figure out what they mean. In the words of Frank Stella, “What you see is what you see.”
