“Ecotourism at Lake Baikal: Opportunities and Challenges”
Russia’s Lake Baikal, known to the Russian people as its “sacred sea,” is the world’s oldest, largest, deepest, and most biologically unusual lake. The lake offers breathtaking scenery and fascinating endemic wildlife, including the Baikal Seal, one of only two species of freshwater seal in the world. However, this “Galapagos of Asia” is located in remote southern Siberia, one of Russia’s poorest regions. Consequently, there is increasing pressure to expand tourism at Baikal. But can this happen in ecologically sustainable ways?
Jean MacGregor and Rob Cole will describe an exciting project (for which they are volunteering), a collaboration among the Great Baikal Trail organization, the staff of Baikal’s protected areas, and several partners in the U.S.
