The Evergreen State College women’s track and field athlete Izabelle Trefts (Jr.) and Evergreen Assistant Cross Country and Track and Field Coach Katie Burnett competed in the 3,000-meter race walk during the USA Track and Field Indoor Championships at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Saturday, Feb. 22. Burnett finished in fourth place and Trefts earned seventh place at the national event.

Burnett, competing for Harrier Track Club, registered a time of 13:47.89. Trefts tied her own school record by crossing the finish line in 14:24.70. She matched the time she earned at the Corban Indoor Open on Feb. 1.

“I’m really proud of Izabelle!” said Evergreen Head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach Joel Pearson. “Not only making the USA Indoor Championships but a seventh place finish was incredible! Throughout the season and this competition, she showed why she will be a force for several years to come!

“This is the highest finish at a US Championship for a Geoduck athlete, and we couldn’t be more proud!” Pearson added.

Lauren Harris, who ran unattached, won the women’s 3,000-meter race walk in 13:23.82. She won by 9.45 seconds over Maria Michta-Coffey of Oiselle/Walk USA, who took second place in 13:33.28.

Trefts was in second place after 1,000 meters with a time of 4:37.14, just 0.42 out of the lead. Michta-Coffey held the lead after 1,000 meters with a time of 4:36.72. After 2,000 meters, Harris owned the lead at 9:01.65.

The Geoducks will participate in the 2025 NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships next weekend. The meet will be held from Thursday, Feb. 27 through Saturday, Feb. 1. Trefts will compete in the 3,000-meter race walk and Alauna Carstens (Jr., So. in indoor track) will compete in the 3,000-meter run.

“It was exciting to see Izabelle race at this level! Burnett commented. “I’m looking forward to NAIA Indoor Nationals next week!”
