Penrose Physical Therapy is Walking with Sairy Reyes on Her Journey to Heal From Severe Leg Break

What brought Sairy Reyes to Penrose Physical Therapy & Associates in Lacey sounds like something out of a TV fictional medical drama about a patient’s intense experience with broken leg bones. But it’s all true. And now she is on the road to recovery, accompanied by the Penrose staff who are walking with her every step of the way.

“I am taking it one step at a time,” Reyes says. “Basically, I am very thankful for them.”

Patient Referred for Penrose Physical Therapy After Severe Leg Injury

Reyes’ unexpected leg injury happened last February when her family flew to New York to visit relatives. They were at a restaurant when she fell and went unconscious. “I don’t remember exactly how it happened,” she says. “I thought I sprained my ankle, but the next morning I couldn’t get up. I was in extreme pain. We called 911.”

She was taken to a trauma center, where X-rays showed broken right leg bones. She underwent surgery. She stayed at her parents’ home so she could recover enough to fly. But fate was not on her side. One day Reyes fell again, requiring a return hospital trip. She then got a leg infection and required more surgery to remove tissue. After further recovery, she was cleared to fly. But chance had more in store. A third surgery was needed to repair her meniscus. And she was referred to start her physical therapy journey at Penrose.

Penrose Physical Therapy Provides Significant Improvements Following Surgeries

“At Penrose, I have had amazing physical therapists,” Reyes says in describing Penrose’s Nicole Marchiori, Kylie Starr and Mary Hale. “They developed a plan for me to regain mobility and full strength of my leg, knee and ankle.”

Reyes says staff have been very encouraging while also explaining that progress and recovery was likely to be slow given the extent of her injury. Even so, when she arrived at Penrose she wore a medical boot on her foot and was using crutches, but she no longer requires them and can walk and drive. She says staff listen to her needs and adjust her treatment accordingly. “When I tell Nicole I have pain, she takes care of it and knows where to hit the right spot,” Reyes says.

Meanwhile, Reyes will need a fourth surgery in January. “I will stay with them,” Reyes says of her post-surgery plan. “They got me to where I am today.”

Don’t Delay in Contacting Penrose for Physical Therapy and Injury/Surgery Rehabilitation

“One thing I can tell the community about getting physical therapy is not to delay the process,” adds Reyes. “Start your recovery plan as soon as possible. Physical therapy is more than physical, especially at Penrose. There I found a support team that took care of me.”
