The National Weather Service has issued a forecast for temperatures over 93 degrees in the Puget Sound for the coming week. This extreme weather is dangerous for those without shelter.
As a result, Thurston County has declared a 3-day, 3-night Hazardous Weather Event. During this extreme heat, Thurston County Homeless Service Providers and City of Olympia staff will provide multiple options for individuals living outside to stay hydrated and find cool places during the day. A fourth day will be added pending staffing and volunteer availability.
For Individuals Living Outside
- Day Time Cooling Activities: An Emergency Cooling Center will operate Tuesday, July 26 through Thursday, July 28 from 2 p.m. – 8 p.m., at 201 NW Capitol Way. This is available for individuals needing to shelter during the hottest parts of the day. Friday will be added pending staffing and volunteer availability. - Increased Shelter-In-Place Activities: Partners in Prevention Education will also provide increased distribution of survival supplies to individuals and families living in encampments.
Donations of water, sunscreen, aloe, Gatorade, and snacks will be accepted Tuesday – Friday from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. at 201 NW Capitol Way. If you would like to donate survival goods, please contact Kim Kondrat at the City of Olympia at (360) 742-6448
Other Emergency Hazardous Weather Shelter options are available at Community Youth Services for youth ages 18-24. Union Gospel Mission’s day center will be open Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.
