Cross town rivals met Tuesday, October 12 in 2A EVCO (Evergreen Conference) League play in Tumwater. The Black Hills Lady Wolves outlasted Tumwater in five sets in a back-and-forth match. Tumwater started strong taking the first set 25-14. The momentum swayed back to Black Hills in sets two and three with close extra point victories going to the Wolves (26-24, 27-25). Tumwater took set four 25-20, leading to the 15-11 victory for Black Hills in the final game.
Black Hills (6-1, 4-0 EVCO) Head Coach Paige Walker was excited for the battle her team gave. “It was not pretty at times but we got the job done,” remarked Walker. “I was so proud of their perseverance and hard work. Tumwater has such a history and tradition here so this was a great win for us. We are working on changing our culture and tonight was a part of that.”
Both teams were supported by a large crowd of parents and students who witnessed the momentum shifting throughout each of the sets. In the fifth set Black Hills led early with Tumwater fighting back to a 9-8 deficit mid-way through the game. The Wolves then made key plays during several intense full rallies to outlast the T-Birds for the 15-11 final set match victory.
Tumwater (6-3, 4-1 EVCO) Co-Head Coaches Jordan Stray and Jill Giudice liked the fight of their team. “It was fun to see our team fight hard after being down two sets,” Stray recalled.
“A highlight was the support our team gave each other and this is a key that they did during the entire match, even when it got hard,” Giudice also noted.
