The nonprofit International Mermaid Museum hosts a quarterly art display featuring work by local residents. The autumn show will open on Friday, October 1, and is titled “Catchers and Keepers: The People, Boats and Fisheries of Washington Coast.” This theme focuses on the integral role of the commercial fishing industry to the coastal economy and families, both in the past and in our future.
Artists may submit only one piece per quarter. The work can be in any medium. The subject must be related to Westport’s commercial fishing industry from buoys to boats, captains to crew, Coho to crab and all subjects in between. Submissions are limited to residents of Grays Harbor, Pacific, Wahkiakum, Jefferson, Clallam, Thurston, Mason, Lewis, and Cowlitz counties.
Entries are accepted from August 15 to September 15 via email to info@mermaidmuseum.org. The artist’s name, address, phone number, a description of the medium, title of the submission, and price, as well as a photo of the work must be included. This is a curated display with limited space so not all work can be accepted.
The museum is located on the grounds of Westport Winery Garden Resort halfway between Westport and Aberdeen on the Washington Coast and is open daily from 11am to 6pm.
In all the museum’s shows, art patrons purchase pieces directly from the artist and pick up the art at the end of the show. The museum does not take a commission on the sale. The display is part of the museum’s effort to support the emerging local art community.
There is no charge to visit the gallery and gift shop. To explore the museum’s exhibit hall there is a $3 admission fee for those over age 5.
