On May 15, 16 and 17, competitive gamers from around the Puget Sound will arrive in Thurston County to attend an esports gaming tournament. This is the first of what is expected to be an annual event brought to the community by Northwest Esports, Olympia & Beyond Sports Commission and Lucky Eagle Casino.

“PARADiGM is for gamers looking to prove themselves in the world of esports. We expect a large attendance and we estimate that 10,000 people will watch from around the world via our digital broadcast,” said Jake Greene, of Northwest Esports, and one of the event organizers.

Greene explains that a lot of gamers talk to each other online on a regular basis but don’t have the opportunity to meet in person. PARADiGM gives them that opportunity. But, more importantly, it’s a proving ground for esports competitors.

“Gamers spend a lot of time online, so there is a misconception that they are not social. For most of us, that’s just not true. The Pacific Northwest is full of very smart people who enjoy online gaming as an esport. PARADiGM will promote inclusivity, the importance of teamwork and competition,” said Greene.

“We are thrilled to welcome esports enthusiasts to the area for PARADiGM,” said Jeff Bowe, Senior Director of Tourism Development at Experience Olympia & Beyond. “We expect that the competitors will explore our destination while they are here, particularly our one-of-a-kind breweries and restaurants.”

The concept of esports has evolved over the past several years and the popularity of competitive gaming is trending upwards rapidly.

“We know from our own research that arenas around the country are selling out for events like this,” said Bowe. “We like the idea of Thurston County getting in on the action.”

Registration is now open here. The event is open to all ages, but anyone 15-years-old and under will need a chaperone.
