South Puget Sound Community College welcomed to campus Kenyan bishop Maurice Muhatia Makumba to explore study opportunities for college-age Kenyans from Nakuru to SPSCC. Members of International Student Services, Student Services, and Professional Technical offices welcomed Bishop Makumba with lunch and discussion on Aug. 23, 2018.
SPSCC’s international office recently expanded its ability to accept international students for short-term certificate and degree programs. This is a high value to students in cities like Nakuru, where students lack formal educational opportunities in computer networking, automotive, and other trade jobs.
At 41, Maurice Muhatia Makumba became not only the youngest Catholic bishop in Kenya, but also the first to be picked from an educational institution to head a diocese. Fr. Makumba was born at Lirhanda village, Kakamega District, in 1968. After completing secondary school at St. Charles Lwanga, he joined St. Mary’s Major Seminary. He then went to Rome, Italy, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree at Urbaniana Pontifican University and a master’s degree in philosophy at Pontifical Holy Cross University. He was ordained priest on Oct. 15, 1994.
