The Evergreen Gallery at The Evergreen State College presents, for the first time, a major exhibition of the college’s Andy Warhol Photography Collection, alongside some of Evergreen’s greatest works by major photographic artists of the 20th century. The exhibition runs January 18 through March 16 and is free and open to the public.
In addition to over 130 photographs, the exhibition includes Warhol’s Screen Tests, a number of short black and white film portraits that were created in the Factory in the 1960’s. Celebrities Salvador Dali, Nico, Bob Dylan and others are featured.
“This exhibition highlights Evergreen’s historic commitment to art and photography,” says Steve Davis, who curated the show.
“We have amazing collections, which most people aren’t fully aware of. I wanted to create an exhibition that puts most of the photographic works in one place. I like how the Warhols and the other great works complement each other.”
The 20th Century works are all analog-based and Davis feels the non-digital perspective will prove interesting to students, who, he says, generally gravitate toward the physical nature of working in a darkroom.
The display is also interactive, with the addition of a “photo booth” operation, inviting guests to have their pictures taken, and hang them up as part of the show. Visitor photos will also be uploaded to the Evergreen Gallery Facebook page.
Opening reception is Thursday, January 18, 4:30 p.m. – 7:00 pm.
The Evergreen Gallery is open Monday and Tuesday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, 10:00 a.m. -7:00 p.m., Saturday 12:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., and closed Friday and Sunday.
