I think we visited new homes being built by every builder in town,” said Charles K., a First Sergeant in Aviation stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), who with his wife Dana recently moved to Lacey, WA from Anchorage, AK.

After an extensive home search, the couple eventually chose the Alder plan built by Rob Rice Homes at the new community of Steilacoom Ridge.

“Dana and I had totally gutted and renovated a duplex in Alaska,” said Charles. “So, when we looked at a home, it gave us an eye for craftsmanship. You want it done perfectly, you want it done right. What we saw in other homes didn’t compare to this Rob Rice Home.”

The couple had even been under contract for another home, but when they grew frustrated with the building process, they cancelled their contract. While they lost money, it was more than worth it to get into a Rob Rice Home that truly met their standards.

“It is obvious Rob Rice cares about quality. His name is on it, it is his product,” explained Charles. “I was taught growing up if you are going to do it, do it right the first time.”

Charles and Dana reflected on how the Rob Rice Home building process was so different.

“We visited once or twice every week while our Rob Rice home was being built,” recalled Dana. “The people who were working on it had much more pride in their workmanship, not just ‘get it done’ and ‘it’s good enough’. You can really tell that they have been with him a while and hold to his standards. You can just tell it.”

Through the building process, when they had concerns, they were immediately addressed.

“There was one small concern that we had with the tile backsplash and the next day they fixed it and that was it,” said Dana. “With Rob Rice Homes, the building process has been a very pleasant experience.”

The couple also noted that that their new home has a bigger lot than most new construction in the area. The floorplan they picked has a larger garage with extra storage space. And, another real attraction to the community of Steilacoom Ridge was the home’s beautiful, yet easily accessible location.

“We are excited about the mountains, water and trees in the area,” said Charles. “It is close to the beauty of Alaska that we enjoyed.”

Dana is a flight attendant for a major airline and finds her once or twice a week commute relatively easy. Charles says it is 10 minutes to get onto I-5 and to JBLM and also finds it a lovely location for his retirement from the military.

The couple decided on their new home early enough in its construction process to get in on the local builder’s unique pre-sale program. They were able to customize their new home with their choice of upscale standard features that are offered by the Best of South Sound builder.

The end result is beautiful and they love it, delighted it suits their personal tastes. But Charles and Dana said a big part of their decision was based on many things you can’t always see.

“We made our choice because of the quality of the home and the amount of attention to detail we found,” Charles noted. “We walked in and we knew it was our home in a couple of hours.”

“Things can look all shiny and pretty on the outside, but it is what is behind the walls that convinced us. The quality of the 2X6 construction, the systems, the finishes, the bones of the house, the workmanship, all those things really impressed us.”
