Do you know that falls are preventable and the number one cause of disability and death among older adults? Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance® (TJQMBB) is a research-based balance training regimen designed for older adults and people with balance disorders. The program aims to improve strength, balance, mobility and daily functioning, and prevent falls in older adults and individuals with balance disorders.
- New series of classes will be starting on April 5, 2016 at both the Lacey and Olympia Senior Centers.
- The series lasts six months. Participants can join in anytime but those who are able to attend at least 75% of classes will benefit the most.
- Participants need to become members of the South Sound Senior Network. Scholarships are available.
- No class fees. Program is funded by a grant.
- Classes meet for an hour two times a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays
- Olympia Senior Center 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. taught by Diana Yu and Sharon Maurmann.
- Lacey Senior Center 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. taught by Diana Yu.
Demonstration classes will be offered at the Olympia Senior Center on Tuesday March 22 and 29 and Thursday March 24 and 31 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Come join the classes and check it out.
We are seeking participants who are older adults living in the community and people with a history of falls, balance disorders, leg muscle weakness, abnormal gait or walking difficulty. The program is able to accommodate people with a mild level of mobility difficulty (e.g., people who are occasional cane users).
This modified 8-form Tai Ji routine and series of exercises transforms martial arts movements into a therapeutic regimen aimed at improving postural stability, awareness and mindful control of body positioning in space, functional walking, movement symmetry and coordination, range of motion around the ankle and hip joints, and lower extremity muscle strength.
