The annual Capital City Marathon is this Sunday, May 18. The course is the same as prior years, with one new road closure for participant safety described below. The full and half marathons and the five mile run will start and stop at Sylvester Park in downtown Olympia. About 1,800 runners are expected. Course and time information is posted on the Marathon’s website: http://capitalcitymarathon.org/
Street Closures: This year Eastside Street at 18th Avenue and at 22nd at Boundary will be closed for runner safety. Both north and south bound traffic will be detoured around the curve through the Boundary and 18th neighborhoods. The detour will go into effect at around 8:00 am Sunday morning and will last 2 – 3 hours. Access to Eastside Street from 20th Avenue by Legion Park will also be closed.
Other streets closed during the event are Capitol Way from Union to Legion, and Washington Street from 7th to B Street.
Traffic may also be briefly halted along the course to allow runners to safely cross intersections.
