North River artist Sherryl Butts-Jackson unveils her latest sculpture at Westport Winery. Kiss, is the focal point of the winery’s Formal French garden. In keeping with the theme of the garden two “Passionate Kiss” roses flank the sculpture where it is located directly in front of a kissing bench, also known as a tête-à-tête (French for “head-to-head“) bench. This bench with two parallel seats, facing in opposite directions, was a popular creation from the Victorian era which allowed intimate but demure conversation.

The French Formal Garden is one of seven “Destination Gardens” created by the winery to teach guests how to design their favorite vacation destination in their own backyard and is part of the winery’s extraordinary display gardens. This style called Jardin à la Française is based on symmetry and the principle of imposing order over nature. It reached its climax in the 17th century with the creation of the Gardens of Versailles.

Within this design style, focal points were created using sculpture or topiary, with each leading you into the design, while fountains and reflecting pools were used to further stylize and control nature. The structural plants offer year around interest while seasonal species create a changing scene. The topiary in this garden features spiral junipers planted in huge rusting baskets from Nelson Seafood that were historically used as cookers in the cannery. All the plants in this garden are available in the winery’s nursery.

Jackson’s first sculpture at the winery, titled Love, is the centerpiece of the winery’s unique lavender labyrinth. Jackson is a member of the Harbor Art Guild and shows her work at Six Rivers Gallery in Hoquiam, Fusions Gallery in Ocean Shores and Matter Gallery in Olympia. She is a feature artist at the upcoming Grays Harbor College Fall Gala. Jackson is the author and illustrator of the children’s book Huckleberry Creek. The artist is in the process of creating a third piece for the winery that will be located in their English Cottage Garden.
