LACEY, Wash. – What do musicologists do for a living? Rebecca Edwards, Ph.D., visiting professor of music and director of the first-year seminar program at Saint Martin’s University, will address this question at the next “Music @ 11” event, scheduled to be held Tuesday, April 16 at 11 a.m., in Kreielsheimer Hall, located on the Lacey campus, 5000 Abbey Way SE. The event is free and open to the public.
Edwards says she hopes her talk, “From College to Career: A Personal Journey,” will inspire students who are majoring in music as they begin to focus on what type of career they want to pursue in the future. “Musicology is really a general term that means ‘the study of music’,” she says. “It can be bewildering to know what a particular professional field is really like, so, I want to provide the students with a window into my work as one of the many roads that are available to someone who holds a degree in music,” she says.
Edwards explains her work is based on historical musicology, which is the study of music within a historical context.
“It’s such a pleasure and a wonderful opportunity for our students and for the music department to have this high-caliber, academic scholar on campus, teaching and inspiring our young musicians and faculty,” says Darrell Born, associate professor of music and chair of the University’s Department of Fine and Performing Arts. “I am confident our students will come away from this presentation with some exciting ideas about their future career choices.”
Edwards previously served as vice director and associate dean for academic affairs at Loyola University Chicago’s Rome campus. She was founding president of The Institute for Greater Roman Education, a Rome-based, study-abroad consulting and management firm. Edwards has taught music and performance studies at Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, Calif., where she directed the Freshman Residential Community, California State University Stanislaus and the University of Maryland’s European Division.
The “Music @ 11” series, now in its eighth year, was created by Born to raise awareness of the musical arts and provide opportunities for students and the community to experience various genres of music in a recital setting.
