OLYMPIA, Wash. — How will our community look, feel and function in 2035? Will we evolve from a liveable community to a more sustainable one that is environmentally healthy and safe as well as economically robust? Sustainable Thurston — a partnership of local jurisdictions, organizations, and residents from throughout the region have been exploring these questions, crafting ideas for a vibrant, healthy and resilient future as well as the action and responsibilities to achieve it.
Starting this week, with the launch of EngageSustainableThurston.org, folks from throughout the region have a new way to contribute to this community-wide conversation. The website, launched as part of the Sustainable Thurston project, enables people to learn about some visions, challenges and strategies and asks participants to answer questions, add ideas and comment on others’ ideas. Citizens who’ve joined the conversation so far say the key to making the Thurston Region more economically, environmentally and socially sustainable is the creation of places, such as city and town centers, urban transit corridors, and neighborhoods, as well as preserving spaces such as rural and resources lands. Quality-of-life topics that the website explores include energy, water, local food systems, economic development, housing and more.
Workshops are also scheduled on March 27th and March 28th – giving folks yet another way to participate. Further details about times and locations will be released as they become available.
