John Skeen has been talking about taxation around the dinner table since he was 13 when his mother started a certified public accounting firm.  Now the managing partner of Bliss & Skeen, Skeen is expressly focused on helping clients pay what they owe and not a cent more.  Located in Olympia, Bliss & Skeen is also staffed with CPA and partner Jamie Tuttle.

Like many Americans, Skeen is paying close attention to discussions in Washington DC relative to expiring tax laws and what is commonly referred to as the “fiscal cliff.”

Economists, politicians and public commentators are debating the impact of the expiration of a number of tax laws along with impending tax increases, spending cuts, and a corresponding reduction in the US budget deficit.  The deficit is expected to be roughly cut in half in 2013 and this sharp reduction is what is referred to as the cliff.

If left unchanged, the expiring tax laws, most initially introduced under the presidency of George W. Bush and extended during President Obama’s first term, are projected to impact almost every American household.  Because of the expected short-term impact on the economy, the fiscal cliff has stirred intense discussions and many are calling for extensions of some or all of the tax cuts.  The conversations continue in Washington DC as well as among media commentators.

Skeen’s approach is to understand what lawmakers are discussing regarding expiring tax laws and how these compromises and decisions will impact his clients. Then, Skeen is absorbing this information and advising clients as they prepare to file their tax return and make financial decisions in 2013.

Skeen strongly encourages Thurston County residents to pay attention to the political discussions and understand the financial impact of expiring tax laws, many which impact Olympia families.

Over the next few weeks, we will be publishing articles about the impact of the fiscal cliff.  Watch for stories about child, sales tax, and earned income tax credits as well as a discussion of the impact of the capital gains tax.
