Olympia, WA – The Steel Bridge Fire, approximately ½ acre in size, is located on Olympic National Forest’s Hood Canal Ranger District within the Skokomish watershed.  It is in the vicinity of the high steel bridge just off of Forest Service Road 2340.  The fire was reported at 3:00 AM this morning and crews from Washington Department of Natural Resources were the first to respond.  The cause is under investigation.

Suppression actions will be taken, with firefighter and public safety as the first priority.  Access to the fire area will be very difficult given that it is burning in heavy timber and steep terrain.  Two engines are en route to the fire and their estimated arrival time is 8:00 AM.  One 20-person initial attack crew and one helicopter have also been ordered; their arrival time is unknown.

No road or area closures are in effect at this time, although closures may be implemented in the future if necessary to ensure both public and firefighter safety.  Please use an alternative route if possible.  Use extreme caution while in the vicinity since fire fighters and equipment will be on the road and smoke may impact visibility.

For information about alternative travel routes or recreation sites, please contact the Hood Canal Ranger District at 360-765-2200.
