Come January next year, Lacey will have a new mayor.
Current mayor Tom Nelson announced that he will not be a candidate for mayor when the new council takes office in January 2012. Nelson said the job requires more time than he has available. He made the announcement Friday during the council’s annual retreat.
In Lacey, the mayor is selected by the city council. Following each council election, the council selects its mayor.
Nelson said his decision not to seek the mayor’s appointment did not mean that he wasn’t running this fall for re-election to his current council seat.
However, many people close to Nelson, feel that he has decided not to seek re-election.
Depending on the outcome of the fall election, any number of councilmembers could be in the running, including former mayor Virgil Clarkson.
