Torch Songs—Songs of Love

Washington Center Main Stage

An evening of beguiling music arrives June 15, when Masterworks Choral Ensemble presents Torch Songs—Songs of Love. Sultry ballads tinged with jazz, torch songs brim with romance or sear with heartbreak—often in the same song.
MCE’s full choir performs such gems as “Old Devil Moon” and “Skylark.” The women of the choir deliver the slow-burning “Fever,” the mid-1950’s ballad Julie London made famous, followed by the men with “Cry Me a River,”
MCE’s small performance group, the “Singers,” will shine in the spotlight with four passionate tunes: “Night and Day,” “Come Rain or Come Shine,” “One for My Baby” and Hoagy Carmichael’s 1920’s classic “Stardust.” Torch songs tend toward the color—and the mood—of blue, and the choir takes on both “Blue Moon” and “Blue Velvet.”
An added attraction: a piano performance by 11 year-old Maximus Sol Park-Desmond, a 5th-grader at Lakes Elementary. Max won MCE’s 2018 Youth Music Competition at the Elementary School Level.
