Join Evergreen students at the Olympia-Rafah Solidarity Mural, as they introduce a new series of walking tours titled “Olympia’s Hidden Histories,” part of the “Walls Tell Stories” project created by Art Forces and the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice.

The public launch will be at the Olympia-Rafah Solidarity Mural (Capitol and State) on Friday, October 7 (the first day of Fall Arts Walk) at 10:00-11:00 am. Invited speakers at the will be from partners who provided guidance and editing for the project, from the Squaxin Island Tribe, Olympia Historical Society, and Locke Family Association. The audience will then be invited to walk all or some of the tours on their smartphones (each tour takes about 45 minutes). The tours collection can be accessed on any internet-connected device (no app download is needed) at https://arcg.is/1O5D0a.

The tours collection produced by Evergreen students is part of the “Walls Tell Stories” project, created by Art Forces (based in Olympia and the San Francisco Bay Area) and supported by the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice (Olympia). “Walls Tell Stories” is partially funded by a Washington Humanities SHARP grant and a Thurston County Heritage Grant, recommended by the Thurston County Historic Commission and awarded by the Thurston County Board of Commissioners.

On Saturday, October 8 (12:00-5:00 pm) a new exhibition space, tentatively called “Peacemaker Gallery,” will open on the second floor of the historic Labor Temple Building (119 Capitol Way North). This exhibit intersects with the publication of Olympia’s Hidden Histories. It showcases collaborative and local art with themes of history and connections found on the mural and tours.
