More than 200 military service members and local business leaders gathered on September 11 for one of Thurston County’s most distinctive traditions: Foofaraw Military Appreciation Day.
Hosted annually by the Thurston County Chamber and Olympia Yacht Club, Foofaraw offers military guests a day away from their regular duties. The event brings service members and community supporters together for camaraderie, recreation, and Pacific Northwest hospitality.
The tradition began in 1962 and continues each September. Its name reflects the spirit of the occasion, inviting participants to say “Foof” to their responsibilities for the day and enjoy the community’s appreciation.

This year’s event began early Friday morning at the Olympia Yacht Club. After gathering at the club, guests boarded yachts captained by community volunteers and departed at 8 a.m. for a private island. They returned to Olympia around 5 p.m. after a full day of activities.
On the island, participants, affectionately known as “Foofarites,” enjoyed the event’s traditional salmon barbecue. The day also included volleyball, horseshoes, tug-of-war, basketball and a golf contest, along with time to relax and build connections.
Military service members attend Foofaraw at no cost. Community sponsors help support the experience and preserve a tradition that has brought Thurston County residents and military guests together for more than six decades.
Comcast participated as an event sponsor this year and funded commemorative co-branded shirts for attendees. Comcast team members also spent the day connecting with military guests and local community leaders.

“Foofaraw is a meaningful opportunity to thank the people who serve our country and strengthen the relationships that make Washington a vibrant place to live,” said Jamison Harris, Government Affairs Manager, Comcast. “We are grateful to the Thurston County Chamber, Olympia Yacht Club and community volunteers who continue to make this special day possible.”
For Comcast, participating in Foofaraw reflects the company’s broader commitment to veterans, service members and military families across Washington.
As another group of Foofarites returned to Olympia, the event once again demonstrated the power of a community coming together to recognize military service.
Foof on, Washington.
