Lewis-Mason-Thurston Area Agency on Aging (LMTAAA) reminds Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) cardholders to use their benefits before the summer farmers market season draws to a close. Program dollars need to be spent by October 31.
Older adults in Lewis, Mason, and Thurston counties claimed SFMNP cards at their fastest pace ever this year. As of August 14, however, 43% of 2026 cards had not been used. Program funds—providing for $80 in fresh fruits, vegetables, and honey from participating farmers markets—will not rollover to the next season.
SMFNP is an annual no-cost benefit provided through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as well as state and local funding. Seniors must meet age guidelines and have an income below the federal poverty level to receive a card.
A recent LMTAAA community survey revealed 17% of participants found eating nutritious food challenging. Eighty-six percent of those shared cost is the top reason why.
