Seven years ago, the Nisqually Valley BBQ Rally started as a simple idea: bring people together over great barbecue. Today, it’s become one of Yelm’s favorite summer traditions – the kind of event families mark on their calendars and look forward to all year. Hosted by the Yelm Chamber of Commerce, the BBQ Rally returns to Yelm City Park on Friday, July 24, and Saturday, July 25, 2026, filling the park with food, music, friendly competition, and that unmistakable small‑town summer energy.
The weekend kicks off Friday evening with the Beer Garden Pre-Funk from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. It’s a relaxed, 21+ gathering held in the Uptown Lounge / 507 Taproom & Filling Station Sponsored Beer Garden, complete with local beer and cider, good food, cornhole, and a handful of silly, creative games that always seem to get people laughing. It’s the kind of night where you run into neighbors you haven’t seen in a while and settle into the weekend with a cold drink in hand.
Saturday morning, the park comes alive. By 10 a.m., the smell of smoked meats drifts across the grass, vendors are setting out their displays, and families are spreading out picnic blankets for a full day of food and fun.
This year, the BBQ Rally is teaming up with the Yelm Farmers Market to create an even bigger experience for visitors.
“We’re really excited about this partnership,” says Dan Nicholson, president of the Yelm Chamber of Commerce and chair of the Nisqually Valley BBQ Rally. “Having both events open and end at the same time gives people even more to enjoy. You can grab lunch at the Rally, wander through the Farmers Market, support local businesses, and make a whole day of it. That’s what local events are all about.”
A Barbecue Lover’s Paradise
If barbecue is your love language, this is your weekend. Fifteen food vendors – including ten dedicated barbecue vendors – will be serving everything from brisket to ribs and of course many specialty dishes. Whether you’re a traditionalist or someone who likes to try something new every year, you won’t leave hungry.
More Than Just Food: Local Vendors and Makers
Alongside the barbecue booths, visitors will find a variety of non‑food vendors offering handmade goods, local services, and unique items you won’t find anywhere else. From small businesses to local makers showcasing their creativity, the vendor area adds a fun shopping element to the day.
Nicholson says this mix is intentional: “We want the BBQ Rally to feel like a full experience. Food brings people in, but our vendors – both food and non‑food – help show off the creativity and talent we have right here in Yelm and the surrounding area.”
Friendly Competitions for All Ages
The Rally’s competitions have become part of its charm. The ACU Pie Eating Contest always draws a crowd, with contestants signing up at the Information Booth in the morning before diving into a fast, messy, and hilarious showdown in the afternoon.
Young grillers ages 11–17 can jump into the Youth Burger Challenge, sponsored by Ferguson Insurance Services. Competitors fire up the grill, craft their best burgers, and compete for cash prizes based on creativity, presentation, and flavor. Spots are still available, and registration is open until Thursday, July 22.
Nicholson says the youth competition is one of his favorite parts of the day: “These kids take it seriously – and they’re impressive. It’s fun to watch them step up to the grill and show what they can do.”
The Amateur Andy BBQ Competition, sponsored by Lucky Eagle Casino & Hotel, also returns, giving backyard pitmasters a chance to show off their skills and earn bragging rights.
Family Fun All Day Long
The BBQ Rally is built for families. Thanks to Y.A.R.D. and Living Water Church, kids can enjoy free games, activities, and bounce houses throughout the day. Parents get a chance to relax, and kids get a chance to burn off energy, a win for everyone.
Capture the Memories
New this year, Dzines is bringing their Selfie Station to the park, offering free photos for attendees.
“As the Chair of the BBQ Rally, one of my favorite things is seeing families and friends making memories together,” Nicholson says. “We wanted to add something simple and fun that anyone could enjoy. The Rally isn’t just about great food – it’s about celebrating the place we call home.”
Live Music on the Northwest Chevrolet Stage
The Northwest Chevrolet Stage will feature live performances throughout the day from regional musicians. Bring a blanket, grab some food, and settle in for an afternoon of music and sunshine.

The BBQ Rally is powered by volunteers, vendors, performers, sponsors, and partners who work behind the scenes all year long. A small but mighty committee puts in countless hours to make sure this event is fun, welcoming, and built for everyone who comes out to enjoy it. Their dedication is what gives the Rally its character and keeps it growing year after year.
