Pope John Paul II High School (JPII) proudly announces that its StellarXplorers team earned an impressive 7th place finish at the StellarXplorers National Finals in Denver, Colorado, ranking among the top high school teams in the nation. Entering the competition ranked 10th nationally, the team improved its standing against the country’s top programs. Notably, JPII was the only team from Washington State to qualify for and compete at this year’s national competition.
StellarXplorers, a program of the Air & Space Forces Association (AFA), challenges students to solve complex, real-world aerospace scenarios, including orbit planning, satellite system design, and launch operations. After advancing through a series of rigorous qualifying rounds, JPII’s team demonstrated exceptional technical skill, collaboration, and perseverance on the national stage.
This achievement marks a historic milestone for JPII in its first appearance at the national finals. Competing against elite programs from across the country, the team distinguished itself through innovative thinking, strong teamwork, and the ability to perform under pressure.
Reflecting on the experience, team captain Caleb Abbott shared: “It was such a great experience to compete at the StellarXplorers National Competition in Denver this year. I’ve dreamed about going for the past four years that I’ve competed — and my sister for the three years before me. It was incredible to see the other teams, many from large schools with extensive support. It was reassuring to know that we could hold our own against the best of the best in the country — and even the world.”
Senior Emerson added, “It was a great capstone to four years of competing. We had a fun and challenging time, and I’m glad we got the opportunity to go.”
Dr. Tracy Russell, the team’s advisor, emphasized the growth and dedication of the students, noting, “Every year, I’m amazed by the maturity and dedication of the students who join StellarXplorers. They learn to work as a team and solve complex, challenging problems while developing real-world skills. This year’s team did a magnificent job—I am so very proud of them.”
Participation in StellarXplorers provides students with meaningful exposure to STEM careers, particularly in aerospace and engineering, while building skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
“JPII could not be more proud of our students. The fact that a school of our size can excel and compete at this level is a testament to the quality of holistic education that students receive at JPII. Special thanks to their club advisor, Dr. Russell, for her leadership and support of this club,” said Mr. Braeden Neal, Principal/Head of School.
