Summer is almost here – how will your child be spending it? “Our Outdoor Adventures Summer Day Camps (on our Farm) are truly special with access to 4.11 acres to explore, along with farm animals including ponies, pigs, alpacas, sheep, chickens, a peacock (and barn cats) to learn from and help care for,” shares Sequoia Hartman, Hartman, who owns and directs Sequoia’s Treehouse Children’s Center, Sequoia’s Farm and Forest School (at the Farm), Sequoia’s School-age After School Program (at the Farm), and Outdoor Adventures Summer Day Camp (at the Farm).

“We are active and on-the-go every day with weekly field trips (mini-buses are used for transportation) and programming focused around outdoor survival skills, camping, campfire cooking, crafts, group games, and so much more,” says Sequoia.

One satisfied parent wrote: “I always trusted that my children were in safe and caring hands. The field trips and activities truly helped my daughter’s social and emotional growth. We plan on making this a yearly tradition and can’t wait for more summer fun at the farm! My daughter even did an overnight which she is still talking about several months later.”

For more than a decade, Sequoia has served the Thurston County community and continues to foster safe, creative, hands-on, outdoor environments for our children.

Week-Long Outdoor Summer Camp in Olympia

Outdoor Adventures Farm Summer Camp is broken into three age groups. The Explorers are the youngest group with children ages from 4.5 to 7. The Discoverers group age range is from 7 to 9. The oldest group are the Rangers who include tweens aged 9 to 13 years. Every week highlights different outdoor adventures and skills. Campers are outdoors rain or shine, though some shelter is available.

All children will have opportunities to explore their world while being outdoors in nature and through crafts, play, field trips, and caring for the farm animals. Campers experience an array of field trips to parks, beaches, lakes, and other interesting areas of the South Puget Sound.

Field trips happen twice weekly for the Explorers and three times weekly for the Discoverers. The oldest group, the Rangers, will have almost daily field trips in and around the South Puget Sound along with kayaking and swimming weekly.

Explorers and Discoverers groups (ages 4.5-7 and 7-9 respectively)

For the Explorers and Discoverers, the first week for these groups begins with an introduction to the farm, which includes getting to know the alpacas, sheep, pigs, ponies (yes, there are pony rides), chickens, barn cats and a peacock.

Archery is an additional option during weeks one, four, seven and nine at the farm (requires a separate sign-up with an outside organization).

Another week features basic first aid and knot tying. There’s an especially wet week with swimming at Millersylvania State Park (their certified lifeguards attend these trips) and water science. Campers will build hydroponic gardens.

Other weeks children learn to build fires and cook over them, churn butter, bake biscuits and make jam. Your children could be geocachers, builders of outdoor shelters, and competent plant identifiers.

More details can be found in the camp weekly schedule.

Rangers group (ages 9-13)

Rangers – those 9 through age 13 – will have a summer full of adventure! All weeks include a kayaking trip to Hope Island and swimming at local lakes with a lifeguard on duty. These older children get to explore and hike National Parks, learn hiking essentials and plant identification. Archery is an option during weeks one, four, seven and nine at the farm (requires a separate sign-up with an outside organization).

Campers will learn outdoor survival skills, cooking, plant identification, how to build a fire, and will participate in group games, camping, rock climbing, weekly swimming, weekly kayaking, fishing, beach combing, clam digging…and so much more!!

Learning about and caring for a farm full of animals is just one aspect of Sequoia’s Farm School Summer Day Campers. Youth from five to 13 years will find adventures await with different activities each week. Photo courtesy: Sequoia’s Farm School
