Supporting a strong community is key to State Farm Agent Melanie Bakala as she and her office team serve the Lacey/Olympia and Shelton areas. Her Community Bucks program, now in its 14th year, is a simple and seamless path to generate contributions to worthy organizations and causes in Thurston and Mason Counties. It’s as easy as asking for a free quote from Bakala or a team member.
Bakala is committed to sustaining local groups and community members through this program that she created. “We want this money to go back into the community,” says Bakala.

How Community Bucks Works
Under the Community Bucks program, Bakala’s office makes a $25 donation to an area community organization or activity each time she or her staff provide a free quote when the potential customer mentions the charitable group or cause. The donation is made regardless, even if the person decides not to purchase insurance. “All we are asking is for the opportunity earn their business,” she says of her goal through Community Bucks to use marketing outreach dollars to further the local community. “It is not based on whether they go with us.”
Local groups receiving Community Bucks over the years include Homes First, Altrusa, Thurston County Baseball Club serving youth, Paws 4 A Cause, and many more. And Bakala says Community Bucks funds do not need to be directed to a traditional 501(c)(3) nonprofit entity and can go to any worthy local organization or cause. “We have even supported kids who want to raise money to go to Washington, D.C.,” she says as one example.
