We can all agree that healthcare has changed a lot over the last couple of decades, but especially the last few years. MultiCare Health System has been at the forefront of patient care for 144 years in Washington State. As they celebrate five years since they acquired the Capital Medical Center, Will Callicoat, president of MultiCare Capital Medical Center, looks back on all they have accomplished and their plans to continue to serve its patients in the best way possible.

“This 5-year celebration is a great chance to say, ‘thank you’ to the community,” shares Callicoat. “People have provided so much moral support, philanthropic support and guidance to ensure our success.”
MultiCare Health System Acquisition of the Capital Medical Center: A Move for Patients
MultiCare Health System started in Pierce County with what is now the Tacoma General Hospital. Since then, they have spread across Washington State to provide excellent care to Washingtonians.
“One shouldn’t have to travel up I-5 to receive the best services,” shares Callicoat. This seemingly simple sentence was the driving force behind MultiCare Health System’s acquisition of the Capital Medical Center on April 1, 2021. “Having MultiCare provide primary care, specialists, pediatrics, and hospital care in Thurston County — all tied to the broader network of care — is an important step in providing comprehensive care for a region,” he adds. “Thus, providing care in Thurston County that is connected to MultiCare’s robust network is helpful.”
Capital Medical Center allowed MultiCare Health System patients from Lacey southward to have easier access to care. Five years ago, they planned to add services, new procedures, new equipment and providers to help patients get the care they needed closer to home both inside and outside of a hospital. This also included more primary care, urgent care (through Indigo) and specialty care.
“Our mission is partnering for healing and a healthy future,” shares Callicoat. “That recognizes that there is so much that influences one’s health. Much more than any one entity can manage on its own. It’s therefore important to partner with community partners to improve the health of a community. A key part of our plan was and continues to be engaging and showing up in the community in which we live.”
Just one example of engagement was when they participated in a Women’s Community Advisory Committee a few years ago. They asked for input into what care was missing for women. “Their input and advice were essential,” shares Callicoat. “The irony is that one must have support from the community to effectively provide care to the community. I have lived in Olympia since 1998 and am truly amazed (but not surprised) by the warmth, support and encouragement from community partners. This community has an amazing way of rallying behind others to make things happen.”

5 Years of Advancements at Capital Medical Center
While five years may not seem like a long time, MultiCare Health System did not sit idle. Over the half decade, MultiCare Capital Medical Center worked diligently to provide new services, better technology and more providers to meet the needs of Thurston County patients. Here are some of the amazing additions the Capital Medical Center has added since April 1, 2021:
- Opened a new neighborhood emergency department in Lacey.
- Added about 30 primary care providers.
- Opened a women’s integrated primary care clinic with rotating specialists and pelvic floor physical therapists.
- Opened five Indigo Urgent Care clinics in the county.
- Achieved primary stroke certification.
- Added cardiologists via our Pulse Heart Institute, who brought advanced cardiac services to the hospital.
- Built a specialized hybrid operating room that combines advanced imaging equipment into the operating room for advanced cardiac and vascular procedures.
- Started a Team Birth service.
“The new services mean that you can receive care with less wait than before,” shares Callicoat. “It also means that we are providing surgeries and procedures that were not available before — maintaining our commitment to keep care close to home.”

Current and Future Projects for MultiCare Health System Capital Medical Center
MultiCare Health Center is not done yet! These first five years were just the start of its plan to continue providing the best care possible, with ongoing upgrades and additions based on patients’ needs.
Recently, on April 1, 2026, they cut the ribbon for a new comprehensive breast center, which greatly increases access for screening mammography and diagnostic services.
In addition, Capital Medical Center was recently awarded State approval for an Assertive Community Treatment behavioral health program. “This program is designed to support individuals with more intensive psychiatric help, with the support from a multidisciplinary team of professionals,” explains Callicoat.
This summer, Capital Medical Center will be replacing its linear accelerator to enhance the radiation therapy treatment for cancer patients.
Later this year, MultiCare Health System will open a new outpatient surgery center for day surgeries that don’t require inpatient admission.
And next year, MultiCare Health System is expanding OB/GYN services and opening a new primary care clinic in Grand Mound.
