Submitted by United Way of Thurston County
It is with heavy hearts and immense gratitude that United Way of Thurston County (UWTC) announces the dissolution of the organization after 90 years of service to Thurston County.
Since 1936, our work has been rooted in a simple belief: neighbors helping neighbors creates lasting change. For nine decades, volunteers, donors, staff, and partners have come together to strengthen schools, stabilize families, and build opportunity across our region.
While this chapter is coming to a close, the impact of this work lives on in the students launched into careers, the families connected to resources, and the partnerships that continue to serve our community.
Our Recent Work
In recent years, UWTC focused its efforts on two core initiatives designed to increase economic mobility and workforce opportunity:
Career and Resource Navigator Program
In partnership with South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC), Thurston County school districts, and Olympia Master Builders (OMB), this program provided hands-on guidance to students and families. Navigators helped connect individuals to financial aid, career pathways, and essential resources — creating clear bridges from education to living-wage employment.
Residential Construction Academy
In collaboration with SPSCC and OMB, the Academy delivered practical, industry-aligned training in the skilled trades. Students gained hands-on experience, mentorship, and pathways to sustainable employment in the construction field.
These programs reflected our long-standing commitment to education, financial stability, and opportunity.
Stewardship of Funds
UWTC will complete its dissolution by March 31, 2026, with careful attention to honoring commitments to participants, partners, donors, and staff.
All funds raised through March 15, 2026, will directly support ongoing programs such as the Residential Construction Academy.
In partnership with the Community Foundation of South Puget Sound and the SPSCC Foundation, remaining funds will be responsibly stewarded to continue supporting aligned work in Thurston County.
A Message from Executive Director Chris Wells
“United Way of Thurston County began with a simple belief: when we come together, we create a ripple of good that touches every corner of our community. As we conclude formal operations, I’m profoundly grateful to the staff who showed up with heart, the volunteers who gave their time, the donors who believed in our mission, and the many partners who stood beside us. The work does not end here — it evolves in the hands of those who continue to serve and lead with compassion. Thank you for 90 extraordinary years of trust and collaboration.”
We encourage our community to continue investing in local nonprofits, schools, and programs that advance education, financial stability, and opportunity.
