The news of Kipert’s Feed closing was a shock to many in the farming community. Particularly, many livestock owners were left scrambling to get the specialty feeds they had been purchasing from them for years. The Rusty Spur, a new tack store in Grand Mound, quickly stepped up to help its community by filling the void left behind.
Grand Mound Tack Store Opening is a Dream Fulfilled
The Rusty Spur is a dream come true for co-owners Dawn Myrick and Cheri Williams. “We met in 1972 at 3 years old,” shares Dawn. “Since that day, we have been lifelong horse lovers. We’ve always wanted to do a fun little store as a hobby.”
Both women have backgrounds in business. Dawn is an Army veteran and owner of a daycare. Cheri has experience as a business manager and also owned a daycare in the past. Both are avid horsewomen as well, with Cheri spending the last 17 years being a rodeo mom to her daughters.
The Rusty Spur opened on December 1, 2025. “I happened upon this location and it immediately looked like a tack store,” says Dawn. The plan? A fun and local source for new and used horse-related items, including tack, show clothes, accessories, barn essentials and gifts.

Kipert’s Feed Closing Left a Void, The Rusty Spur Jumped Right in
What wasn’t planned was the announcement of Kipert’s Feed closing at the beginning of 2026, just a month after The Rusty Spur had opened. “With the surprising news of the closure of Kipert’s, we jumped in to support the community’s needs for various feed, hay, grain and supplements to support horses, pigs, rabbits, chickens and more,” shares Dawn.
The owners quickly polled their customers, as well as those in local farm and horse groups, asking them what feeds they used to get at Kipert’s that they now needed to source elsewhere. The feedback from the public has been profuse gratitude. “You guys are amazing for stepping up like you have!” shares Hannah Mae Barlett.
In addition to adding feed and hay, they work hard to provide local makers, artists and bakers a place to sell their products. “We are working with local artisans to showcase their creativity with items such as local honey, cottage licensed cookies, candles, tallow-based and botanical herb skin care products, farm fresh eggs and more,” shares Dawn. “These unique items start conversations about local products and create community.”
Walking into the store, you will be quickly greeted by smiling faces, ready to help you. Want to try on something before you buy? No problem, their bathroom doubles as a dressing room…even if that means taking a brand-new show shirt out of its sealed plastic bag, removing all the crazy pins and clips and cardboard! (Thankfully, the shirt fit if you are wondering. And it was quite the steal at just $15 for an English show shirt!)
They have entire room of pet supplies too, including collars treats and toys. If you need gifts, they have everything from retired Painted Ponies and jewelry to vintage collectibles and funny farm signs. You can consign your used tack and buy something new.
As they continue to add items, they encourage you to ask! “If we don’t have what you’re looking for we will try to get it in the store,” shares Dawn.
