Pope John Paul II High School (JPII) celebrated a historic day as the boys’ cross-country team won the Washington State High School Cross-Country Championship, marking the first boys’ state athletic title in school history. Junior Kevin Hu led the way, capturing the individual state championship—another first for JPII.

The Eagle girls’ team also turned in an extraordinary performance, finishing as the top 1B team and placing third overall in the combined 1B/2B division, behind only two larger 2B programs. Their effort showcased depth, determination, and unity—continuing a proud legacy of excellence for JPII’s female runners.

“Today was a remarkable day for the Pope John Paul II community,” said Head Coach Larry Weber. “Our boys captured the state title, and Kevin earned the individual championship with an outstanding performance. Our girls competed with great heart and determination. Above all, we give thanks to the Lord for the strength, unity, and blessings that made this achievement possible. It’s truly a great day to be an Eagle.”

Senior Amy Kondrat reflected, “In my four years, I’ve never had such a wonderful summit of a season filled with positivity and faith in God. This team did amazing, and I’m so proud of every one of my teammates.”

Champion Kevin Hu added, “Today was such a blessing. I couldn’t have done this without the support of God, my coaches, and my teammates. This season has truly been a wonderful experience and a blessing from God.”

This victory adds to the storied legacy of excellence for JPII Cross Country. Since 2018, the Eagle boys have claimed seven consecutive district titles, while the girls have earned six. Both teams have consistently ranked among the top in the state, with the boys securing five runner-up finishes and one third-place finish before capturing this year’s state championship title. Meanwhile, the girls have done well, winning four straight state titles and narrowly finishing second in the year prior to this season. These achievements reflect the unwavering commitment of JPII Cross Country to teamwork, perseverance, and faith.
